| How Gotabhaya Rajapakse escaped death - D.B.S. Jeyaraj |

Gotabhaya Rajapakse is indeed a very, lucky man. The circumstances of his escaping unhurt indicate it was truly a miracle which saved the Defence, Public Safety, Law and Order Ministry Secretary and younger brother of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse.
Rajapakse was on his way to “Temple Trees” for the National Security Council meeting. President Rajapakse had returned from India the previous day.
The nine - vehicle motorcade was going along the Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatte towards Galle road.The convoy had to cross Sir James Peiris Mawatte at the junction known as “Pithala Handiya”.
The traffic was stopped by Special Forces personnel in charge of Rajapakse’s security for the motorcade to pass when a red three - wheeler bearing the number WP - GH 0617 tried to cut in and ram into the motorcade. The male auto - rickshaw driver found it difficult to get close because of the heavy traffic.
The assassin then manouevred himself between two civilian vehicles and moved in. The escort defender jeep in front of Rajapakse’s bullet - proof BMW vehicle collided with the three - wheeler when the explosion occurred. It is not known whether the explosion was triggered off by the impact of the collision with the jeep or whether the assassin detonated the bomb deliberately.
The explosion hit the Special Force outrider riding abreast of Rajapakse’s vehicle on a pilot trailer motor cycle. The bike was thrown more than 20 metres.
Both the motor cyclist Lance cpl Wijeratne of Kurunegala and the Jeep driver Lance cpl. Piyasiri of Galle were killed along with the suicide bomber.
The defender Jeep and motor cycle bearing the brunt of the explosion was a Godsend to Gotabhaya’s BMW vehicle. The full force of the explosion was minimised to some extent.
The bonnet, headlights, tyres and windscreen of Rajapakse’s vehicle were damaged by the blast. The driver too sustained minor injuries. But both Rajapakse and his personal bodyguard seated in the front seat were unhurt.
Rajapakse seated in the left side of the vehicle’s backseat was thrown to the right side due to the explosion’s impact. He was apparently dazed and lying still on the back seat.
Some glass splinters had grazed Rajapakse slightly. His right eyebrow was cut.A few, tiny drops of blood were seen on his shirtsleeves and collar.
The defence secretary’s Personal Security officer HD Kapuhena saw his boss’s situation and jumped over the seat to the rear. Kapuhena put his body armour over Rajapakse’s torso and a gas mask over his head.
The explosion’s impact had caused the vehicle doors to be jammed. Kapuhena was shouting out that the doors should be opened when other security men in the convoy rushed to the BMW.
A crowbar was brought and the doors broken open. Kapuhena with his arms around Rajapakse took him to another jeep and put him in. The defender then sped off towards Galle road. From there it went along Galle road towards “Temple Trees”.
Kapuhena and other security personnel fired shots rapidly in the air as the vehicle proceeded to clear the way quickly. This in turn terrified ordinary people in Kollupitiya who thought a gun battle was on between the security forces and tigers in Colombo. Several parents rushed to schools and took their children home.
Meanwhile an agitated Mahinda Rajapakse shouted over the telephone to security officers that Gotabhaya’s safety had to be ensured.
A visibly upset Mahinda was relieved only after he saw Gotabhaya at “Temple Trees”. He embraced Gotabhaya tightly with moist eyes and remained speechless for more than a minute.
Mahinda recovered later to exclaim “They cant kill you. You cant be killed” in Sinhala.
Several VIP”s including Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake and Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana rushed to congratulate Gotabhaya on his miraculous escape.
The Defence secretary’s wife who was attending a Seva Vanitha Unit meeting at the Air Force headquarters was informed of the attack and rushed to her husband’s side.
Gotabhaya told a journalist that it was God who had saved him.He also issued a press release.
The defence secy then went to a hospital for a check up and went home. He was advised to rest and promptly went to sleep.
Ms. Rajapakse told callers that her husband was sleeping and could not be disturbed.
Meanwhile security officers cordoned off the area of explosion and stopped traffic till late into the night.
Fire fighters were called in to douse the flames engulfing some vehicles after the explosion.
Seventeen vehicles including two passenger buses were damaged. Eight of these underwent extensive damage. The damaged vehicles belonged to both security forces and civilians.
Eighteen persons were injured. Of these Thirteen were admitted to hospital. Eight were security men while five were civilians. Three of the injured were admitted to the Nawaloka Hospital and the others to Colombo National Hospital
Among injured civilians were Foreign Ministry Secretary HMGS Palihakkara and former Treasury secretary Charitha Ratwatte. The injuries were minor. They were travelling separately and were not part of Gotabhaya’s motorcade.
The severed head of the suicide killer was found in the back of a doublecab about 25 metres way from the explosion.

Meanwhile the United States condemned the assassination bid and urged the LTTE to enter talks.”The attack bears all the hallmarks of an operation by the LTTE,” the US embassy in Colombo said in a statement.”We once again call on the LTTE to renounce terrorism, to give up violence and to join in negotiating a peaceful solution to Sri Lanka’s conflict,” it added.
Police also announced that the thre - wheeler’s registered owner had been traced. The owner was Anthony Bernard Christopher of Kadawatte.
Police also said that the mobile phone of the suicide bomber was now in Police custody.
The statements of more than 20 eyewitnesses at the explosion site have also been recorded.Twenty-seven year old bus driver I.S Weerasekera, who operates on the 112 Kotahena-Maharagama route, said his bus had been stopped at the traffic lights by the Special Forces to make way for the Defence Secretary’s convoy when he suddenly heard a big bang and saw flames.
“Suddenly I heard a huge blast and soon after saw clouds of smoke followed by blazes rising from under the mango tree. Then a bike in flames came hurling towards the bus. I ducked to avoid being hit, and the windscreen was shattered”, he added
It is also reported that Police have taken into custody around 15 Tamils in Colombo for questioning. |

இந்திய அரசின் உதவியுடன் காங்கேசன்துறை துறைமுகத்தை புனரமைக்க அரசு தீர்மானித்துள்ளது. இதற்கு சுமார் 236 கோடி ரூபா செலவாகும் எனவும் மதிப்பீடு செய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது.
இதற்கமைய இந்திய அரசு 230 கோடி ரூபாவை வழங்க முன்வந்துள்ளது. மிகுதியான 6 கோடி ரூபாவை இலங்கை அரசு ஒதுக்கீடு செய்யவுள்ளது. இத்துறை முகத்தை மூன்று கட்டங்களாக அபிவிருத்தி செய்யவுள்ளதுடன் இதன் அபிவிருத்தி புனரமைப்பு நடவடிக்கைகள் எதிர்வரும் 2008 ஆம் வருடத்தில் பூர்த்தி செய்யப்படவுள்ளது என்றும் அரசு வட்டாரங்கள் தெரிவித்தன. |

அம்பாறை மாவட்டத்தின் திருக்கோவில் பிரதேசத்தில் வைத்து மூன்று இளம் தமிழ் குடும்பஸ்தர்கள் சிறிலங்காப் படையினரின் துணை இராணுவக்குழுவினரால் சுட்டுக் கொலை செய்யப்பட்டனர். திருக்கோவில் விநாயகபுரம் பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்த கே.சந்திரன் இ.எஸ். நாவிந்தன் அருன் மற்றும் பி.நந்தக்குமார் ஆகிய மூவருமே இவ்வாறு சுட்டுக் கொலை செய்யப்பட்டவர்களாவர்.

Four people have been arrested in connection with a suspected Tamil Tiger suicide bombing targeting Sri Lanka's defense secretary, including the owner of a motorized rickshaw used in the attack, police said on Saturday.
Three people, including the bomber, died in the bombing in the capital Friday and 14 more were injured.
Police traced the owner of the black-and-yellow motorized rickshaw from the vehicle's registration number plate which was not destroyed in the blast, a police officer said on condition of anonymity citing the sensitivity of the information.
He was arrested late Friday, and three other suspects including a friend of the vehicle's owner were arrested Saturday, the police officer said.
The government has blamed separatist Tamil Tiger rebels for the attack and said Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse appeared to be the target.
Military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe said the bomber triggered the explosives as a five-car convoy of vehicles was passing. Rajapaksa, the younger brother of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was in one of the bulletproof cars, flanked by two motorcycle escorts.
Rajapakse, a retired military colonel, was not injured in the attack, but the military said two soldiers died, and nine soldiers and five civilians were hospitalized.
The rebels have not commented on the suicide attack and attempts to contact Tamil Tiger officials were unsuccessful.
Suicide bombings are a hallmark of the Tamil Tigers, who have been fighting for more than 20 years for a separate homeland for Sri Lanka's 3.1 million minority ethnic Tamils.
The government says it is willing to grant Tamils autonomy in areas where they are a majority, but the rebels want broader powers.
Meanwhile, the pro-rebel TamilNet Web site said Sri Lankan air force planes bombed houses in the rebel-held district of Mullaithivu on Saturday, injuring one civilian.
An official at the military's media center said he had not received information of an air force raid in the area. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the center's policy.
A spike in violence this year has killed 3,500 fighters and civilians, imperiling a 2002 cease-fire and threatening to return the country to all-out war. |

யாழ் தீவுப்பகுதி மீதான தாக்குதல் நடவடிக்கையொன்றை எதிர்பார்த்து கடற்படை பெரும் எடுப்பிலான ஒத்திகை நடவடிக்கைகளை கடந்த சில தினங்களாக நடாத்திவருகின்றது. குறிப்பாக ஊர்காவற்துறை மற்றும் காரைநகர் போன்ற கடற்படைத்தளங்களிலேயே இவ்வாறான போர் ஒத்திகைகள் முன்னெடுக்கப்படுகின்றது.
கடற்படைத்தளங்களிலேயே இவ்வாறான போர் ஒத்திகையின் போது பரவலாக தீர்க்கப்பட்ட வேட்டுக்களால் கரையோரப் பகுதிகளிலுள்ள மக்களது. குடியிருப்புக்களின் கூரைகள் பலவும் சேதமடைந்தன இச் சூட்டுச் சம்பவத்தில் பெண்ணொருவரும் தாக்குதலில் படுகாயமடைந்தார்.
முகாம் வீதியைச் சோர்ந்தவரான கோகன் திருவருட்ச்செல்வி (31) என்பவரே காயமடைந்து யாழ்போதனா மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார்.
கடல்வழியான தரையிறக்க முனைப்புக்களை எதிர்கொள்ளும் வகையிலேயே ஒத்திகைகளில் பெருமளவிலான கடற்படையிர் ஈடுபடுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளதாகத் தெரியவருகின்றது.
கடந்த ஓகஸ்ட் 11ம் திகதி விடுதலைப்புலிகளின் தாக்குதலுக்குள்ளான மண்டைதீவு கடற்படைத்தளம் பெரும் சேதங்களைச் சந்தித்திருந்தது. இந் நிலையில் மீள அக்கடற்படைத்தள முன்னைய நிலைகள் அண்மைய நாட்களில் கடற்படையினரால் மீளமைக்கப்பட்டுவிட்டன இத்தகையதோர் பின்னணியிலே மீண்டும் ஒரு தாக்குதல் இடம்பெறலாம் என்ற எதிர்பார்ப்பில் கடற்படை பெரும் எடுப்பிலான ஒத்திகைகளை நடாத்தி வருவதாகக் தெரிவிக்கப்படுகின்றது. |

At 11.00am today two Sri Lankan Kfirs began bombing raids over civilian settlements in Mullaithivu.
Vadduvaikal village adjacent to the tsunami temporary settlement was bombed at 11.00am. Eight bomb were dropped over this area.
This was followed by a second sortie over the village of Thevipuram next to Vallipunam village. Again a total of eight bombs were dropped. One civilian was injured, three houses were damaged in this bombing.
Sri Lankan air force spy plane continued flying over the Vanni mainland throughout the morning. |

In the wake of his visit to Sri Lanka in November, the Special Envoy of the UN Under Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflicts, Ambassador Allan Rock, has recommended that the United Nations widen its focus from only recruitment and use of child soldiers at present to include the killing of children and the denial of humanitarian access for children. As part of his visit, Ambassador Rock observed the situation facing children in areas under embargo by the Sri Lankan security forces.
The Sunday Times this week published extracts from Mr. Rock’s report to the UN.
It states that his mission in Sri Lanka discovered there was strong and “credible evidence” that the security forces were supporting and sometimes participating in the abductions and forced recruitment of children by the Karuna Group paramilitaries.
Mr. Rock is said to cite eyewitnesses and families of abducted children along with other sources of evidence to support his findings.
According to the Sunday Time, Ambassador Rock also states in his report that:
“I recommend that the Security Council expanding its focus and give equal care and attention to children affected by armed conflict in all situations of concern; and to give equal weight to all categories of grave violations beyond the recruitment and use of child soldiers to include the killing and maiming of children, rape and other grave sexual violence, abductions, attacks against schools or hospitals, and denial of humanitarian access for children.”
As part of his visit, Ambassador Rock visited the Vaharai region where he visited an internally displaced camp which Sri Lankan forces had shelled, killing and wounding dozens of people, including children.
The region is under a strict embargo by government forces, with starvation on the verge of setting in amid severe shortages of food and medicine.
Last week, amid intense international pressure, Sri Lankan forces permitted two weeks supply of food to enter. Another 40 trucks worth of food was stopped and sent back.
Meanwhile, both the Sunday Times and The Sunday Leader newspapers said that Mr. Rock had written to the Sri Lankan government saying that despite Colombo’s denials and vilification of him, the UN official was standing by his report.
Copies of his report to the UN had been sent to the Sri Lankan government, the papers said.
“However, in forwarding the evidence, Rock has been careful not to furnish the names or addresses of the eyewitnesses having considered implications for their security, a decision taken in consultation with the international community and top UN officials,” The Sunday Leader said. |

இனப்பிரச்சினைக்கு முடிவு காண அரசியல் தீர்வு காணப்பட வேண்டும், சமாதானப் பேச்சுக்கள் தொடர வேண்டும் என்னும் அரசாங்கத்தின் நிலைப்பாட்டை மீண்டும் வலியுறுத்திப் பேசிய சரத் பொன்சேகா "அமைதிக்கு வழி காண வேண்டுமெனில், விடுதலைப் புலிகள் தங்களது இராணுவத்தைப் பலப்படுத்த அனுமதிக்கக்கூடாது. இது சிறிலங்காவின் படையைப் பலவீனப்படுத்துகிறது" என்று கூறினார்.
அமெரிக்காவுக்கு மூன்று நாள் உத்தியோகப்பூர்வ பயணம் மேற்கொண்டுள்ள சரத் பொன்சேகா, அங்கு அமெரிக்காவின் அரசியல் விவாகர பிரதி செயலாளர் நிக்கலஸ் பேர்ன்ஸ், அமெரிக்க இராணுவ கட்டளை அதிகாரி ஜெனரல் பீற்றர் சூமேக்கர் ஆகியோரைச் சந்தித்து பேசியபோது இக்கருத்தைத் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
இலங்கையின் பாதுகாப்பு நிலவரம் குறித்து அமெரிக்க அதிகாரிகளுக்கு சரத் பொன்சேகா விளக்கி கூறியதாக தெரிவிக்கப்படுகிறது.
கடந்த நான்கு ஆண்டுகால யுத்த நிறுத்தத்தில் விடுதலைப் புலிகள் தங்கள் படைபலத்தைக் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அளவு பலப்படுத்தியுள்ளனர்.
பீரங்கிகள் 10 இலிருந்து 100 ஆக உயர்ந்துள்ளது. 122 மி.மீற்றர் துப்பாக்கிகள் இரண்டிலிருந்து 20 ஆகியுளள்ன. 20 கனரக மோட்டார்கள் 80 ஆக உயர்ந்துள்ளன. விடுதலைப் புலிகள் வலிமையான போராளிகளாக வளர நான்கு ஆண்டுகால யுத்த நிறுத்தம் உதவியுள்ளது என சரத் பொன்சேகா குறிப்பிட்டதாக வாசிங்ரனில் உள்ள சிறிலங்கா தூதரக அறிக்கை தெரிவிக்கிறது.
எனவே அரசாங்கம் தனது படை பலத்தை சோதிப்பது அவசியமாகிறது. விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் படை பலமிக்கதாக வளரவில்லை என்பதை உறுதிப்படுத்துவதற்காவது இந்தச் சோதனை அவசியம் என அவர் கூறியுள்ளார். |

| Norwegian peace envoy to visit Kilinochchi Tuesday - TamilNet |

Norwegian peace envoy, Mr. Jon Hansen Bauer, who has been staying in Colombo since his arrival last Wednesday, is scheduled to visit to Kilinochchi to hold talks with Senior leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), sources in Colombo said.
Mr. Bauer has already held discussions with Mr.Nimal Sripala de Silva, leader for Sri Lanka Government's peace negotiating team, and Palitha Kohona, Secretary General of the Sri Lanka Peace Secretariat.
He also had had discussions with envoys of Co-chairs in Colombo, diplomatic sources in Colombo said.
He was earlier scheduled to visit Killinochchi on Monday, and but reports from Colombo say the visit has been changed to Tuesday. |

தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகளை முடிந்தவரை ஒடுக்கும் முயற்சிகளை சிறிலங்கா அரசு மேற்கொண்டு வருகிறது. அனைத்து வழியிலும் அழித்தொழிக்கும் அரசின் திட்டங்களில் ஒன்றாக, விடுதலைப் புலிகளை தடை செய்வது குறித்து யோசித்து வருகிறது.
தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகளை தடை செய்யக்கோரும் சிறப்பு அறிக்கை ஒன்று சிறிலங்கா நாடாளுமன்றத்துக்குச் சமர்ப்பிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
அரச தலைவர் மகிந்த ராஜபக்ச தலைமையில் நேற்று வெள்ளிக்கிழமை மாலை கூடிய அமைச்சரவைக் கூட்டத்தில் இது பற்றிய விவாதம் நடந்துள்ளது.
இந்த மனு குறித்து மகிந்த இதுவரை எவ்வித முடிவும் எடுக்கவில்லை எனவும் தெரிகிறது.

The US Embassy in Colombo has condemned the suicide attack on Gotabaya Rajapakse, the Sri Lankan defence secretary and brother of SL president.
Full text of the press release issued by the US Embassy follows:
COLOMBO – December 1, 2006: The United States condemns strongly the terrorist attack this morning on the convoy of Defense Secretary Rajapakse. While we are gratified that Secretary Rajapakse is safe and well, the United States extends our sincere condolences to the families of those who were killed and wounded in this terrible incident. The attack bears all the hallmarks of an operation by the LTTE. We once again call on the LTTE to renounce terrorism, to give up violence and to join in negotiating a peaceful solution to Sri Lanka’s conflict.

| Sri Lanka President's brother escapes bomb blast |

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse's brother Gothabaya, who is also the island's defence secretary, narrowly escaped a suspected suicide bomb attack in the island's capital on Friday, officials said.
Hospital officials said 14 people were admitted with injuries after the blast, including one seriously hurt.
The President's office said Gothabaya was unhurt and had gone straight to see his brother after the attack, blaming it on a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber.
"After the explosion, he directly came to the President's office and hugged him," said Sudath Silva, President Rajapakse's official photographer. "The blood on his clothes was that of his security guards."
"The President told him: 'They will never do it'."
The secretary's driver had earlier said he had suffered slight injuries.
The attack comes just days after the Tigers' shadowy leader Velupillai Prabhakaran said the groups were resuming their independence struggle, which analysts said means a new chapter in the island's two-decade civil war is likely to escalate.
The Tigers were not immediately available for comment, but routinely deny involvement in attacks -- denials few believe.
"It looks like a suicide attack, either from a three wheeler or by a motorbike," said a police officer at the scene, refusing to give his name.
A Reuters witness saw a headless body in the back of a civilian pickup lorry at the scene of the blast and the wreckage of a three wheeler taxi -- vehicles which have been used in previous bomb attacks blamed on the rebels.
Two cars and a motorbike caught in the blast lay on the road in flames.
"President Mahinda Rajapakse remains unshaken in his resolve to achieve peace in Sri Lanka and in his efforts to combat all forms of terrorism and violence," Rajapakse's office said in a statement.
The attack took place outside an upscale Indian restaurant in downtown Colombo, a few hundred metres from the Prime Minister's offices.
Sri Lanka's two-decade civil has killed more than 67,000 civilians, troops and rebel fighters since 1983, around 3,000 of those this year alone. |

 Gotabaya Rajapakse, the Sri Lankan Secretary of Defence and brother of SL President Mahinda Rajapakse, narrowly escaped a bomb blast in Colombo Friday morning. Seventeen, including Mr. Gotabaya Rajapakse's security commandos, were injured in the attack, suspected to be a suicide mission, Police said. Mr. Gotabaya Rajapakse, who advocates a military solution to the Tamil national problem, was on his way to meet Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse. The attack took place at Pithala Junction in Dharmapala Mawatha in Kolpitty around 10:30 a.m.
The suicide killer had come in a three wheeler, military sources said.
7 vehicles were damaged in the explosion. |
